 The oceanographic vessel Astrea leaves the continental harbor of Castellammare di Stabia (Naples, Campania) on the 4th of October 2014, to reach the Gulf of Patti, the second study area in Italy situated in the northern coast of Sicily. On board the crew members and the ECOSAFIMED scientific staff composed by: Marzia Bo, from the University of Genova; Jordi Grynyo, from the Superior Council of the Scientific Investigation of Barcelona; Simonepietro Canese, from ISPRA.

The Biodiversity Foundation of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment), the Spanish Research Council-Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM/CSIC), the University of Genoa and the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies of Tunisia have participated in the workshop held in Barcelona in the framework of the ENPI-ECOSAFIMED project, organized by the ICM/CSIC. The project aims to study the impacts of traditional fishing gears on the seabed and to propose measures for their reduction and mitigation.

The scientific co-ordinator for the ECOSAFIMED project, David Díaz Viñolas, took part in the first European Land Stewardship Conference, held in Barcelona on 6 November to promote this conservation strategy.

On the 20th of August 2014, the ECOSAFIMED scientists Marzia Bo and Sandro Cerasi, from the University of Genova, and Jordi Grynyo, from the Superior Council of the Scientific Investigation of Barcelona, joined the crew members of the oceanographic vessel Astrea and the marine biologist Simonepietro Canese from ISPRA in the harbor of Formia, close to Rome. Direction: Ponza Island, the largest of the Italian Pontine Islands archipelago, located 33 km south of Cape Circeo in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
